Oborevwori Mourns Passing of Bishop Emeritus Afareha
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Most Rev. John Okeoghene Afareha, who passed away at the age of 78.
In a condolence message issued on Sunday and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, the governor described the late cleric as a devoted servant of God whose life of faith, humility and service left a lasting impact on the Church and society.
Governor Oborevwori said Bishop Afareha’s priestly and episcopal ministry was marked by spiritual discipline, pastoral simplicity and unwavering commitment to the growth of the Catholic faith, particularly within the Warri Diocese.
According to the governor, the passing of the Bishop Emeritus represents a significant loss to the Catholic Church, Delta State and humanity at large, noting that the late cleric was widely respected for his fatherly guidance, prayerful life and dedication to service.
He extended his condolences to the Catholic Bishop of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, the clergy, religious and faithful of the diocese, as well as the family of the deceased.
Governor Oborevwori also prayed for God’s comfort for all those mourning the loss and asked that the soul of the late Bishop be granted eternal rest.
Bishop Afareha was ordained a Catholic priest on 30 December 1973, and was consecrated Bishop on 14 May 1997. The Catholic Diocese of Warri announced his death with profound sorrow, expressing hope in the resurrection.
