By TAYO TAIWO (T.T.) OLUWOLE
OBIAGARI Pemela Ameachi’s silver-medal finish at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games is more than just another podium moment for Team Nigeria—it is a story of grit, growth and grace under pressure. Competing in Riyadh on the same day she arrived after a long journey, the 24-year-old discus thrower delivered a solid 56.99m throw, edging into second place behind Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie, who won gold with 57.04m.
Turkey’s Ozlem Becerek claimed bronze, while fellow Nigerian Chioma Chukwujindu narrowly missed the podium despite a commendable 55.80m effort.
For Obiagari, the medal crowns a season defined by technical refinement and steady progress. Reflecting on her performance, she spoke with the calm confidence of an athlete coming into her own.
“This year has been very developmental for me,” she said. “Despite the long travel, I responded well to the competition. I’m happy to bring a medal home to Nigeria, even if it wasn’t the colour I wanted.”
Her silver in Riyadh marks another bright spot for Nigeria’s athletics campaign—and hints at even bigger throws ahead.
