NYSC Reviews Orientation Framework, Plans Disability Protocols

Institutional Reform and Youth Development Focus
THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to adopt a unified protocol for managing the participation and welfare of Corps Members with disabilities during orientation camps and throughout their service year.
The Director-General of the Scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the announcement at the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Pre-Orientation Workshop held in Jos, Plateau State.
General Nafiu said the proposed protocol forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the Orientation Course as a foundation for effective national service. He explained that the policy would prioritise dignity, inclusion and equal opportunity, while promoting empathy among camp officials and partner agencies.
According to him, the NYSC must remain responsive to national and global realities, particularly in the way it supports vulnerable groups within the Scheme.
The DG described the Orientation Course as a critical stage in shaping Corps Members’ attitudes and readiness for service, stressing that it must deliver quality outcomes that enable smooth integration into host communities and prepare young Nigerians for productive lives beyond service.
He noted that the Pre-Orientation Workshop plays a vital role in identifying operational gaps and proposing improvements that address contemporary challenges faced by the Scheme.
General Nafiu praised NYSC personnel and partner agencies for their teamwork, which he said had contributed to the success of previous orientation exercises. He, however, challenged participants to think creatively and propose innovative solutions that would enhance camp operations and stakeholder coordination.
He said the adoption of technology-driven engagement and institutional intelligence would help transform the Orientation Course into a dynamic platform for leadership development, innovation and national impact.
Earlier, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Nura Umar, said the workshop was designed to review previous orientation exercises, identify emerging challenges, and strengthen inter-agency collaboration.
According to him, the Orientation Course remains central to instilling discipline, patriotism and core NYSC values in Corps Members, making continuous evaluation and reform essential to the Scheme’s success.
