Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has secured the provisional hosting rights for the 2028 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), marking the institution’s return to hosting the prestigious competition for the first time since 2001.
The approval was granted by the NUGA Council and communicated via a letter dated December 3, 2025, signed by Acting Secretary-General Yunusa M. Bazza. The letter noted that the approval is conditional upon the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement.
NUGA further granted the university approval to commence renovations and upgrades of its sporting and auxiliary facilities, while encouraging engagement with strategic partners to guarantee a successful event.
ABU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adamu Ahmed welcomed the decision, describing it as consistent with national efforts to harness universities as platforms for talent discovery and sports industry development.
He stressed that the games would extend beyond campus competition, offering national value through economic activity, youth engagement, and social cohesion, even amid prevailing economic challenges.
Prof. Ahmed commended the NUGA Council for the confidence reposed in ABU and assured that the university would leverage its facilities, expertise, and sporting culture to deliver a memorable tournament.
