THE Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced mandatory safety training for Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) staff as part of preparations to resume operations following the 26 August derailment.
Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa, addressing staff at Idu Station, emphasised strict adherence to operational directives and caution orders. He said a four-day refresher course would begin on 22 September to reinforce safety protocols before trains return to service.
Opeifa also reviewed recovery and restoration progress, noting that lessons from the derailment investigation had informed the new measures. He praised AKTS staff for their coordinated emergency response and led a prayer of thanksgiving for the preservation of lives during the incident.
On staff welfare, he confirmed a 95% salary increase would be implemented before year-end and weekend incentives for AKTS personnel. He, however, warned drivers against strike threats, stressing such actions undermined national service delivery.
Opeifa was joined by directors from civil engineering, corporate planning, and mechanical departments during the visit.
