Northern States Adjust Work Hours, Take Welfare Steps As Ramadan Begins
Adjusted Schedules Across States
THE commencement of Ramadan has prompted several northern states to introduce measures aimed at supporting Muslim faithful during the fasting period.
Governments in Kebbi State, Sokoto State, Zamfara State and Jigawa State reduced official working hours for civil servants, while Sokoto also adjusted school schedules.
In Kebbi, Governor Nasir Idris approved new working hours of 8am to 2pm from Monday to Thursday and 8am to 12 noon on Fridays. Jigawa’s Governor Umar Namadi directed civil servants to close at 3pm instead of the usual 5pm during the fasting month.
Sokoto authorities said the reduction in school hours would ease the strain on students and teachers observing the fast.
Financial Relief in Zamfara
In a related move, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State approved early payment of salaries and pensions. The government said the decision reflected sensitivity to economic realities and aimed to provide relief to families during Ramadan.
Entertainment Restrictions in Kano
Meanwhile, the Kano State Censorship Board ordered the temporary closure of entertainment centres and suspension of DJ activities across Kano State. The board stated that the directive was intended to foster a calm environment for worship and reflection.
Clemency and Interfaith Solidarity in Kaduna
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State granted freedom to more than 90 minor offenders by settling their fines. He urged residents to embrace compassion, peaceful coexistence and unity during Ramadan and Lent.
In a gesture of interfaith harmony, the Church of Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry distributed food items to Muslims, Tsangaya schools and internally displaced persons. Church leader Yohanna Buru said the outreach, sustained for two decades, underscores the importance of solidarity and mutual respect among faiths.
Across the region, the measures highlight efforts by state governments and community groups to combine spiritual observance with social responsibility during the holy month.
