NNPC Foundation Extends Farmers’ Empowerment Programme To Northern Nigeria

THE NNPC Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of NNPC Limited, has extended its Vulnerable Farmers Training Programme to Northern Nigeria.
This marks the second phase of the project aimed at empowering rural farmers and improving food security.
Mr. Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., said the initiative supports national development by promoting sustainable agriculture and rural economic growth.
Building on Southern Success
The first phase of the training, held in Southern Nigeria, empowered over 4,000 farmers.
Participants learned modern farming practices, post-harvest management, and strategies to access better markets.
Encouraged by its success, the Foundation is expanding the programme to six northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Focus Areas and Training Goals
The training focuses on:
-
Climate-smart agriculture,
-
Organic fertiliser use,
-
Post-harvest loss reduction, and
-
Market access strategies.
The goal is to help farmers move from subsistence to commercial agriculture, increasing their income and productivity.
Supporting Nigeria’s Agricultural Transformation
During the first phase’s launch in Nsukka, Enugu State, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, said the initiative supports the Federal Government’s agricultural transformation plan.
She noted that agriculture sustains over 70% of Nigerians, yet many farmers lack access to modern equipment and training.
“This programme will help farmers increase their yields and earnings,” Arukwe said.
“We want them to move from survival farming to profitable farming.”
Empowering Farmers for Sustainable Growth
According to Arukwe, the Foundation aims to create jobs, reduce poverty, and build food self-sufficiency.
By training more farmers, the NNPC Foundation strengthens rural communities and supports the nation’s food security goals.
NNPC’s Broader Commitment
Through this initiative, NNPC Ltd. continues to promote inclusive economic growth.
The Foundation’s efforts reflect its long-term commitment to empower Nigerians, boost agriculture, and drive national progress.
