Night of Terror In Sokoto: Bandits Kill Two, Abduct Dozens In Achida

Coordinated Night Attack Shakes Achida Community
SUSPECTED bandits have launched a deadly late-night assault on Achida town in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing two residents and abducting at least 25 others, including local vigilantes, women, and a child.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday night, underscores growing concerns about the spread of insecurity to communities close to the Sokoto metropolis, with Achida located just about 20 kilometres away.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the operation was both calculated and well-coordinated, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of existing security arrangements in the region.
How the Attack Unfolded
Residents said the gunmen stormed the community around 11 p.m., initially targeting a vigilante outpost on the outskirts of the town.
According to a local source, the attackers surrounded and abducted members of the vigilante group before advancing into the town itself.
“They took the vigilantes first, then moved into the town and began taking women and children from their homes,” the resident recounted.
The attackers reportedly operated quietly for nearly an hour, avoiding detection until gunshots were fired as they retreated, triggering panic among residents.
By the time the shooting began, two people had already been killed.
Signs of Tactical Coordination
Another resident described the attack as highly organised, noting that the bandits appeared to operate in separate groups.
While one group carried out the abductions within the town, another reportedly positioned itself outside Achida, possibly to monitor any response from security forces.
This level of coordination, observers say, reflects an evolving strategy among armed groups, enabling them to strike swiftly and withdraw before reinforcements arrive.
Growing Fear in Nearby Communities
The attack has intensified fears among residents of communities surrounding Sokoto, many of whom say bandit activities are gradually encroaching closer to urban centres.
Achida’s proximity to Sokoto city has heightened concerns, with locals warning that the frequency and boldness of attacks suggest a worsening security situation.
“This is no longer something happening far away. It is now at our doorstep,” one resident said.
Calls for Urgent Government Intervention
In the aftermath of the attack, community members have called on authorities to establish a permanent military presence in Achida.
They argue that a nearby security outpost could serve as both a deterrent and a rapid response mechanism to future threats.
Residents also emphasised the need for increased surveillance and patrols in the area, particularly at night when such attacks are most frequent.
Silence from Authorities
As of the time of filing this report, attempts to obtain official confirmation from the Sokoto State Police Command, including spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, were unsuccessful.
The absence of immediate official response has further fuelled anxiety among residents, who are seeking reassurance and concrete action from security agencies.
Conclusion: A Region Under Pressure
The Achida attack highlights the persistent challenge of banditry in northwestern Nigeria, where rural communities continue to bear the brunt of violence.
For residents, the priority is clear—enhanced security presence and proactive measures to prevent further attacks.
Without swift intervention, the fear is that such incidents may become even more frequent, drawing ever closer to major urban centres.
