Nigeria, EU Move To Deepen Economic & Security Ties

DIPLOMATIC AND ECONOMIC COOPERATION FOCUS
NIGERIA and the European Union (EU) have renewed their commitment to deepening cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, peace and security, governance, climate action and the digital economy.
This reaffirmation followed a meeting between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Ahmed, and the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, held to strengthen bilateral relations.
Ahmed described the EU as one of Nigeria’s most critical development partners and expressed satisfaction with the steady improvement in relations. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to economic diversification, with priority attention given to agriculture, innovation, climate-smart development and the digital economy.
He also underscored Nigeria’s leadership role in regional peace and security, particularly in West Africa, and welcomed continued EU support in counter-terrorism, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and post-conflict stabilisation efforts.
On climate change and migration, Ahmed called for enhanced EU collaboration in climate adaptation, energy transition, access to climate finance and green technology transfer, alongside humane and cooperative migration frameworks focused on youth empowerment.
In his response, Mignot praised the alignment between Nigeria’s development priorities and EU objectives, describing 2026 as a key year for expanding engagement. He announced plans for a Nigeria–EU Ministerial Meeting scheduled for March 2026 in Abuja.
