Delegations Arrive as Action Begins
BENIN City comes alive today as the 2nd Niger Delta Games officially get underway at the historic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
In the build-up to the opening ceremony, delegations from participating states arrived in quick succession at the Games Village located within the Benson Idahosa University campus. Accreditation tents buzzed with activity as athletes and coaches completed registration formalities.
Delta State set the pace as the first contingent to check in, with Bayelsa and Imo States following shortly after. Officials say the structured arrival process was designed to minimise delays and ensure athletes remain focused on competition.
Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, expressed cautious optimism about the event’s readiness.
“We are satisfied with the preparations so far, but at this stage, attention to detail is critical,” he noted, emphasising the importance of avoiding last-minute setbacks.
Entertainment Meets Athletic Excellence
The Games’ opening ceremony promises a colourful fusion of culture, music and pageantry. Under the supervision of entertainment impresario Edi Lawani, crews conducted extensive sound and lighting tests inside the stadium, perfecting choreography and stage arrangements.
Headlining the ceremony are reggae-dancehall sensation Patoranking and acclaimed gospel act Eben, expected to deliver electrifying performances before a packed crowd.
Organisers describe the event as more than a sporting contest — a platform to foster unity, youth empowerment and healthy rivalry across the Niger Delta.
As the torch is lit and the first competitions commence, expectations are high that the 2nd edition of the Games will build on the legacy of its debut and further cement Edo State’s reputation as a hub for major sporting events.
