NEF Says Tax Data Deal Endangers Sovereignty
THE Northern Elders Forum has issued a stern warning over the FIRS–France tax data MoU, describing it as a strategic misstep capable of weakening Nigeria’s economic autonomy. Addressing the Federal Government and National Assembly, the forum said the agreement opens Nigeria’s tax infrastructure to foreign oversight, a move it considers dangerous in an era where data equates to power.
Economic Independence at Stake
According to the NEF, surrendering control over taxpayer information exposes Nigeria to potential blackmail, surveillance and external influence over fiscal policy. The elders argued that no serious sovereign nation hands over such sensitive data to another state, especially given Nigeria’s ongoing security and economic challenges.
Backing Local Capacity Over Foreign Control
The forum also criticised the failure to prioritise Nigeria’s local technology ecosystem, noting that indigenous firms have built globally competitive fintech and payment systems. It urged authorities to rely on domestic expertise rather than foreign governments to manage tax infrastructure. Concluding with a final caution, the NEF warned that Nigeria must resist any arrangement that mirrors economic occupation under the guise of technical assistance.
