Morocco’s U-20 Triumph Exposes Nigeria’s Football Failings
By FRED LONGJOHN OBEH
MOROCCO’S historic victory at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup has underscored Nigeria’s decline in youth football development. The Young Atlas Lions defeated Argentina 2–0 in Santiago, becoming the first North African side to win the tournament — a stark contrast to Nigeria’s 4–0 exit to the same team in the Round of 16.
Analysts, including former sports administrator Seigha Porbeni, praised Morocco’s planning and discipline, urging Nigeria to emulate their structured approach. Porbeni blamed Nigeria’s struggles on poor league organisation, political interference, and corruption, which hinder genuine talent development.
He cited the Nigeria Professional Football League’s instability and Remo Stars’ recent CAF Champions League loss as signs of systemic decay.
Former Handball Association scribe Victor Onogagamue echoed the sentiment, saying corruption and nepotism have crippled Nigeria’s football progress.
As Morocco celebrates disciplined growth, Nigeria’s football authorities face renewed calls for reform, transparency, and accountability.
