THE ancient city of Kano came alive on Saturday as thousands of Muslims gathered in colourful processions to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), an annual event widely known as Mawlid Nabiyy or Takutaha.
Men, women, and children thronged the streets in their finest traditional attires, carrying banners and waving flags as they moved through different neighbourhoods of the city. Songs of praise to the Prophet echoed across the ancient walls of Kano, creating an atmosphere of reverence and festivity.
A Day of Processions and Praises
The processions, organised by various Islamic groups, filled major streets with jubilant crowds chanting melodious praise songs in unison. Many participants carried symbolic banners, while others showcased colourful flags to represent their devotion.
At different venues, Islamic scholars delivered sermons, highlighting the Prophet’s virtues and urging Muslims to embody his qualities of humility, peace, love, justice, and compassion.
Malam Abubakar Mohammed of Unguwar Waibai reminded the faithful that the Prophet’s life remains the ultimate guide for humanity.
“By following the Prophet’s teachings, Muslims can cultivate noble qualities and live harmoniously with others,” he said.
Similarly, Malam Musa Isa of Tauroni Quarters described the Prophet’s birthday as a moment of reflection and renewal of faith. He encouraged believers to strengthen their commitment to Islamic principles and continue to emulate the Prophet’s devotion to justice and mercy.
Joy and Security in Equal Measure
Residents expressed delight over the peaceful conduct of the annual celebration, describing it as an event that unites the Muslim community in worship, reflection, and joy.
Security was a key feature of the festivities, with heavy security presence ensuring a hitch-free event. Patrol vehicles and officers were stationed at strategic points across the city, providing safety and order as the processions unfolded.
