Kaduna: Association Organises Qur’anic Contest For Deaf Students
THE Al-Furqan Deaf Islamic Da’wah Association, Zaria, Kaduna State has organised a Qur’anic competition for hearing-impaired students drawn from 13 Local Government Areas of the state.
Malam Yasir-Suleiman Kofa, Leader of the competition told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria on Wednesday that the hearing-impaired students competed in four categories.
Kofa explained that the categories were; one-Hizf (Volume), two-Hizf, five-Hizf with Tafsir (interpretation) of the Glorious Qur’an, stressing that the event featured four contestants from each participating LGA.
He added that the event was aimed at encouraging hearing-impaired students to showcase their knowledge of the Holy Qur’an.
“Winners in the one-Hizf category from Ikara Local Government Area and the two-Hizf category from Kaduna South Local Government Area received ₦50,000 each.
“Similarly, second-place winners in all categories were awarded ₦30,000 each, while third-place contestants received ₦20,000 each,” he said.
However, winners of five-Hizf with Tafsir (interpretation) of the Holy Qur’an were undecided at the end of the event.
Similarly, Alhaji Mahmud Isma’ila, Member representing Zaria City Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, urged Muslim religious bodies to promote the use of sign language in Qur’anic teaching and learning for the benefit of hearing-impaired.
He noted that reading the Holy Qur’an through sign language would ease Islamic knowledge acquisition for the deaf community.
“This knowledge is very rare and unique, as it will help hearing-impaired students practice the religion of Islam with ease.
“I, therefore, urge all Islamic religious bodies to support this initiative.
“It’s pertinent to note that the deaf have been isolated from Qur’anic knowledge for a long time,” he observed.
In support of the initiative, the lawmaker purchased 10 copies of the Holy Qur’an in Sign Language at the cost of ₦140,000.
The said copies were donated to the Centre for Islamic Legal Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the Kaduna State University (KASU), where each of the institutions received five copies.
The competition tagged “Kaduna State Deaf Qur’anic Sign Language Competition and Grand Launching of the Qur’an in Sign Language for the Deaf” recorded a huge success.
The contest attracted participants from within and outside the state.
