IN a thrilling U-15 singles quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Algeria’s Zouitene Bilel pulled off a stunning upset, defeating Nigeria’s Victor Joseph at the ongoing ITTF Africa Youth Cup in Lagos.
Report states that the tournament is ongoing at Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The match was a closely contested affair, with both players displaying exceptional skill and determination.
Bilel’s superior strategy and technique ultimately gave him the edge he needed to secure the win.
The 15-year-old player with a right- handed grip and attacking style, beat Joseph 3-2 (11-4, 15-13, 11-7, 10-8, 10-7).
Joseph, known for his aggressive playing style, struggled to contain Bilel’s precise shots and clever tactics.
In spite of his best efforts, Victor could not overcome Bilel’s dominance, ultimately succumbing to a hard-fought defeat.
Bilel’s victory marks a significant milestone for Algerian table tennis, as he advances to the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.
The win also sets up an exciting matchup between Bilel and his next opponent, promising more thrilling action at the ITTF Africa Youth Cup.
In the U15 girls singles quarterfinal, Egypt’s Thabet Farida beat Algeria’s Jade Morice in a narrow set win 3-2 (11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5, 11-8) to advance to Semi semi-finals
Egypt’s Elhakim Khadeeja defeated Nigeria’s Mariam Aruna, the daughter of Nigeria’s top seed Quadri Aruna, in a straight set win 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-2) to advance to the Semifinals.
The tournament featuring top young table tennis talents from across the continent showcases the skills of 76 players from 14 countries in the U-15 and U-19 categories.
The players will compete for ITTF ranking points and attractive prize money.
The tournament trophy is named the BRF Cup, in honour of the former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s contributions to sports development.
The event is part of the 2025 Festival of Table Tennis, a series of international tournaments in Lagos.
The ITTF Africa Youth Cup aims to promote table tennis development in Africa, providing a platform for young players to gain international experience and showcase their skills.
The tournament is expected to boost the growth of the sport on the continent and inspire the next generation of table tennis stars.
