Hoodlums Vandalize Second Niger Bridge
THE Second Niger Bridge linking Asaba to Onitsha has been vandalized.
The destroyed parts of the bridge are road fittings on the bridge stolen by vandals.
According to a source at the Federal Ministry of Works who expressed dismay on Wednesday, the expansion joint walkway on the axis 330 of the bridge had been stolen.
He said; “Unfortunately, it is true. The stolen fitting is an element from the expansion joints of the bridge. Drivers on that road have to be careful as the damaged part can cause discomfort to motorists.”
As result of the vandalization, the Federal Government has asked security officials to begin surveillance patrols of the bridge.
The Anambra state governor Prof. Charles Soludo was angry about the vandalization, saying “We have informed the police, DSS, and the army to include the Bridge in surveillance and security operations henceforth.
The destruction of the bridge which was constructed by the Buhari administration to ease traffic on the old Niger Bridge constructed by Alhaji Tafawa Belewa government in the 1960s poses serious danger to motorists plying the bridge.
It would be recalled that Muhammadu Buhari on May 23 commissioned the N336 billion bridge.
