Governor Oborevwori’s Church Ushering Sparks Online Debate

By PAULINA NZERUBE
A video showing Delta State Governor, Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, performing ushering duties at the ongoing Shiloh 2025 programme of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) in Ota, Ogun State, has stirred intense reactions on social media.
The footage, shared on Facebook by the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Ossai Ovie Success, captured Oborevwori standing alongside other ushers while the church service was in progress.
Praise for Humility
In his post, Success described the governor’s action as a reflection of humility and devotion, suggesting that his commitment to service in church mirrored his leadership approach in Delta State.
“A governor dedicated to the work of God will always perform beyond expectations,” he wrote, adding that Oborevwori’s conduct was worthy of emulation.
Supporters Defend Governor
Several social media users defended the governor, noting that serving in church departments is a long-standing practice in Winners Chapel, regardless of one’s social or political status.
A Facebook user, Emmanuel Amaechi, said he had witnessed senior public office holders and military officers perform similar duties, including cleaning and ushering, as part of church service.
Others argued that Oborevwori is a recognised elder in the church, simply carrying out his assigned responsibilities.
Criticism and Political Undertones
However, critics questioned the heavy security presence around the governor during the service, describing it as distracting and contradictory to the idea of humility.
Some users also linked the incident to broader concerns about the intersection of religion and politics in Nigeria, arguing that public officials often use religious platforms to shape public perception.
As the video continues to circulate, Nigerians remain divided over whether the governor’s action represents genuine humility or political symbolism.
