Gov Oborevwori Hands Over Land To FMBN For Workers’ Housing Scheme, Waives N200m Fe
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has handed over land and a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) for the construction of a workers’ housing estate in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area.
The governor made the presentation on Tuesday at Government House, Asaba, describing the initiative as part of his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of Delta workers.
₦200 Million Fee Waived To Ease Workers’ Access
Governor Oborevwori disclosed that the 10.1-hectare land, located at Core Area 2, Ibusa, was allocated for the project being jointly executed by the FMBN, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
He explained that while the C of O was prepared since January 2024, the official presentation was delayed by administrative procedures.
“In support of our workers, I approved a waiver of statutory fees amounting to about ₦200 million to ease the acquisition process,” Oborevwori said.
“Most junior and middle-level workers spend a significant part of their salaries on rent. That is why this housing scheme is very important. I urge FMBN to deliver the project on time and make it accessible to those for whom it is intended.”
The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for encouraging collaboration between federal agencies and state governments, assuring continued support from his administration to ensure the project’s success.
FMBN Commends Delta’s Development Drive
Earlier, Dr. Mohammed Sani Abdul, Executive Director of Loans and Mortgage Services at FMBN, praised Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to infrastructure and housing development across Delta State, especially within Asaba and its environs.
He urged local government councils in the state to contribute to the National Housing Fund, enabling the bank to extend affordable housing projects to grassroots communities.
“FMBN was established over 32 years ago to bridge Nigeria’s housing gap, now estimated at between 20 and 22 million units,” Dr. Abdul noted.
“We currently have about nine ongoing projects across Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and other states. Delta is very strategic to our national housing goals, and we intend to make a lasting impact here.”
He added that under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Mega Mini-City initiative, the FMBN aims to provide affordable housing for Nigerians at all income levels, especially low-income earners.
