Nigerian Students Increasingly Turn To AI For Academic Support –Google

NEW data from Google Search Trends has revealed that Nigerian students are increasingly turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support their academic work, marking a major shift in study habits across the country.
As students resume for the new school year, Google recorded a 200% rise in search interest for “AI + studying” compared to 2024. The surge highlights how technology is reshaping how young Nigerians learn and engage with complex subjects.
According to Google, the overall search interest in AI reached an all-time high in 2025, growing by 60% over the past 12 months. Students are applying AI tools to a wide range of subjects — with searches for “AI + Chemistry” increasing by 50%, “AI + Maths” and “AI + Languages” by 30%, and “AI + Grammar” by 20%.
Many students are seeking direct academic help from AI tools. The most popular queries include:
-
“What is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems?”
-
“How to use AI to solve math problems.”
-
“AI tutor for students.”
-
“Free AI tools for studying.”
-
“Useful AI prompts for studying.”
Beyond homework help, curiosity about AI itself is also growing. Searches for “how to use AI” and “what is the full meaning of AI” both rose by 80%, while “who is the father of AI” jumped by 70%.
Interestingly, “AI detection” searches spiked by 290%, showing that awareness of academic integrity and originality is rising alongside AI usage. Meanwhile, “Generative AI” emerged as a breakout term, often paired with searches about “professional certification” and career opportunities.
West Africa Director at Google, Olumide Balogun, described the trend as a positive sign of innovation:
“It’s inspiring to see Nigerian students so eagerly embrace AI to support their learning journeys. The data shows that students are not just using AI for answers but as a tool to deepen understanding of complex subjects — from chemistry to mathematics.
This curiosity is key to fostering a new generation of innovators, and Google remains committed to providing tools that empower them to learn, grow, and succeed.”
