Four Killed As Gunmen Strike Again In Anambra

By OBI DAVIES
AT least four people were killed on Sunday when gunmen opened fire at Afor Market Junction in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack occurred around 6 p.m. along the Awka–Onitsha Old Road, hours after another assault in Ihiala LGA where the wife of a church pastor was murdered and properties set ablaze at Saint Andrew’s Anglican Church.
Witnesses said the assailants arrived in a black SUV and shot indiscriminately at residents gathered around the busy junction. A viral video from the scene shows four young men lying dead, two of them in a gutter, as panicked residents expressed shock and grief.
Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, said security agencies have been alerted and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, describing it as a cult-related attack linked to an ongoing crackdown on rival groups in the Awka axis. He said four people were fatally injured before the attackers fled and noted that earlier arrests had yielded intelligence now being used to track the suspects.
Anambra, like much of the South-east, has faced rising insecurity, with escalating attacks by cult gangs, armed groups, kidnappers and separatist elements. Hundreds have been killed or abducted in recent months, further straining security across the region.
