Security Agencies Uncover Alleged Coup Network
NIGERIAN security agencies have arrested Nollywood actor and filmmaker Stanley Amandi in connection with an alleged plot by some military officers to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, according to official and security sources.
Mr. Amandi, who previously served as chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in Enugu State, was taken into custody in September 2025. Until now, his alleged involvement had not been made public.
Investigators Allege Media Strategy Role
Sources close to the investigation said the actor was allegedly engaged by the plotters to function as a media strategist and propagandist. His role, investigators believe, was to help shape narratives around the planned takeover and possibly influence public perception once the operation commenced.
The alleged plot reportedly involved plans to assassinate senior political leaders, including the president and other top officials, as part of a violent transition of power.
Military Confirms Completion of Probe
The Defence Headquarters confirmed on Monday that investigations into the alleged plot had been concluded. In a statement, the military said findings had been submitted to appropriate authorities for further action.
According to the DHQ, the investigation followed established procedures and examined “all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.”
The military added that the actions of those indicted were “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
From ‘Indiscipline’ to Coup Allegations
When reports of arrests first surfaced last October, the army stated that 16 officers were being investigated for disciplinary infractions. At the time, officials denied that the matter involved a coup plot.
Subsequent investigations, however, reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting a broader conspiracy involving additional officers and civilians. Sources say the initial framing of the probe as a disciplinary issue may have been aimed at preventing public panic.
Trials in Military and Civil Courts
Officials familiar with the case said military suspects will first be tried by court martial in line with service regulations. If found culpable, further prosecution in civil courts may follow.
Civilians implicated in the alleged plot, including Mr. Amandi, are expected to face trial in conventional courts under Nigeria’s criminal laws.
Career in Nollywood
Mr. Amandi has built a long career in Nigeria’s film industry, working across multiple roles. His directing credits include Tiger King and The Album, while he appeared as an actor in Once Upon a Dream in 2024.
Since his arrest, he has not made any public statements. His social media activity ceased shortly before his detention.
