THE Federal Government, in partnership with global health organisations, has launched the Innovative Cancer Medicine (ICM) Demonstration Study to provide free immunotherapy for Nigerians with metastatic colorectal cancer.
Unveiled at the National Hospital, Abuja, the 18-month programme—the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa—will treat 30 patients at no cost, covering diagnostics, drugs, and follow-up care.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, said the initiative reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to modernising cancer care and reducing medical tourism.
Principal Investigator, Prof. Bello Abubakar, described the ₦7 billion project as a milestone in Africa’s cancer treatment, noting it is not a trial but a demonstration of accessibility to globally approved therapies.
Partners include CHAI, PICI, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Roche, which will fully fund the programme. Experts urged early screening and public awareness as colorectal cancer rates rise among young Nigerians.
