Retreat Focuses on Institutional Reform
THE Federal Government says it is strengthening Nigeria’s cyber justice ecosystem through deliberate institutional reforms and enhanced inter-agency collaboration.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, disclosed this at the National Cascade Train-the-Trainer Leadership Retreat for the Joint Case Team on Cybercrime (JCTC) in Abuja.
Represented by Mrs. Leticia Ayoola-Daniels, he described the retreat as a platform to consolidate expertise and align stakeholders toward a unified strategy.
The event was organised by JCTC with support from the Commonwealth Secretariat and the UK Foreign Commonwealth Development Office.
Rising Complexity of Digital Crime
The Attorney-General highlighted the growing complexity of cybercrime, citing ransomware, online fraud, sextortion, identity theft and cryptocurrency-based laundering as key threats.
He noted that digital crimes are evolving rapidly and exploiting coordination gaps among enforcement agencies.
“Cybercrime does not respect institutional boundaries,” he said, stressing that capacity building and prevention strategies must complement enforcement.
He added that as more young Nigerians engage in digital spaces, structured awareness and preventive measures are critical to curb early involvement in cyber offences.
Forging a Unified Mission
Head of JCTC, Mrs. Jamila Ade, described the retreat as an opportunity to strengthen leadership and mindset within the cybercrime response community.
She said the training allows agencies to step back from operational pressures and focus on long-term strategic coordination.
“Our response must be united and disciplined,” she stated, warning that fragmented efforts would leave vulnerabilities unaddressed.
Dr. Nkechi Amobi of the Commonwealth’s Cyber Capability Programme praised Nigeria’s efforts to build resilience in its digital security architecture.
Toward a Stronger Cyber Justice Framework
Participants at the retreat included representatives from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, and other security and legal institutions.
Speakers emphasised leadership development, policy harmonisation and cross-border cooperation as critical pillars for success.
Observers noted that as Nigeria’s digital economy expands, strengthening the cyber justice ecosystem will be central to protecting citizens, maintaining investor confidence and ensuring national security.
The retreat concluded with renewed commitment from stakeholders to transform strategy into measurable impact, positioning Nigeria as a proactive player in the global fight against cybercrime.
