FG Moves To End Open Defecation In Nyanya–Mararaba Corridor
By AUGUSTINA McSOLOMON-OGHAKPERUO
THE Federal Ministry of Environment has pledged to collaborate with residents and stakeholders to eliminate open defecation along the Nyanya–Mararaba axis of the FCT and Nasarawa State.
Dr. Bahijjahtu Abubakar, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, said in Abuja that the ministry would identify affected areas, construct public toilets in strategic locations such as the Mararaba International Market, and intensify public sensitisation.
She warned that open defecation causes air and water pollution, releases methane that worsens global warming, and triggers disease outbreaks like cholera and typhoid.
Abubakar added that the ministry would also conduct routine sanitary inspections and prosecute offenders to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment.
