FCT Council Polls: APC Secures Three Councils, PDP Takes Gwagwalada

#FCTDecides2026: Chairmanship Results Across FCT Area Councils (LIVE)
VOTERS across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory cast their ballots on Saturday in what observers described as a closely watched grassroots contest.
Elections were conducted in Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kwali, Kuje and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
In total, 637 candidates from 17 political parties contested 68 positions — comprising 62 councillorship seats and six chairmanship offices. Five area councils have 10 wards each, while AMAC has 12.

Following ward-level collation, final declarations were made at the area council collation centres.

Gwagwalada: PDP Edges APC
– Registered voters: 207,577
– Accredited voters: 46,294
Results Summary
– PDP: 22,165
– APC: 17,788
– APGA: 1,687
– ADC: 1,366
– Others: Below 500 votes each
– Total valid votes: 43,960
– Rejected votes: 1,521
The PDP claimed victory in Gwagwalada, defeating the APC by a margin of 4,377 votes.
AMAC: Maikalangu Returned Elected
Christopher Maikalangu of the APC has been re-elected chairman of AMAC.
Collation Officer Andrew Abue declared that Mr. Maikalangu polled 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast.
The ADC came second with 12,109 votes, while the PDP secured 3,398 votes.

“That Maikalangu, having fulfilled the requirements of the law, is hereby declared elected,” Mr. Abue announced.
Party agents from ADC, APC, APGA, YPP and NNPP endorsed the results by signing the official sheets.
APC Collation Agent Gambo Babale praised the process, saying the transparency observed across polling units and collation centres strengthened confidence in the outcome.
The YPP’s Abdullahi Ibrahim echoed similar sentiments and congratulated the winner.
Bwari: Ishaku Clinches Victory
In Bwari, Joshua Ishaku of the APC secured 18,466 votes to win the chairmanship seat.
Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen declared him duly elected.
The ADC candidate polled 4,254 votes, while the ZLP candidate garnered 3,515 votes.
Voting took place across Igu, Shere, Dutse, Ushafa, Byazhin, Kuduru, Kubwa, Usuma, Bwari Central and Kawu wards.
Kwali: APC Extends Lead
Daniel Nuhu delivered another victory for the APC in Kwali, polling 16,656 votes.
His closest rival, PDP candidate Haruna Pai, secured 8,467 votes.
The announcement was made at the Kwali final collation centre on Sunday morning after voting in all 10 wards.
Overall Picture
With victories in AMAC, Bwari and Kwali, the APC has secured three of the four area councils declared so far. The PDP holds Gwagwalada.
Results from the remaining councils are expected as collation continues.
