Farotimi Slams Police, Judiciary Over Protest Restrictions
By AMINA USMAN ABDULRAHMAN
HUMAN rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has criticised the Nigerian Police and judiciary for curbing citizens’ rights to peaceful protest.
Speaking on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief, Farotimi condemned the police and court order that sought to stop Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, led by activist Omoyele Sowore.
He argued that in a democracy, citizens should not need police permission to protest, only to notify authorities for security purposes. Farotimi accused the judiciary of acting under executive influence and failing to uphold justice.
“The Nigerian state is deaf; it does not listen,” he said, describing the country as one merely “pretending to be a democracy.”
