Chinua Achebe Estate Distances from Self-Styled Foundation
THE Chinua Achebe Estate has formally distanced itself from the recently announced Achebe Hope Foundation, rejecting claims by Chief Alex Ubaka Achebe that he is related to the late literary giant, Professor Chinua Achebe.
According to the Estate, Ubaka is unknown to the family and has no familial connection to the celebrated author. “Ubaka Achebe is not Chinua Achebe’s nephew, and his father is not Chinua Achebe’s elder brother,” the Estate said in a statement.
Foundation’s Stated Mission
In public statements, Chief Ubaka claimed that the foundation was established to support indigent students, widows, and orphans, as well as provide financial aid for medical bills. “All these and more we’re going to do,” he said, describing the initiative as a tribute to Achebe’s compassion and humanitarian spirit.
Ubaka further asserted that he started the foundation two months after Achebe passed away in 2013, positioning it as a continuation of the late writer’s legacy. “Professor Chinua Achebe brought our name to limelight; he brought it to the whole world, but that was in literature,” he said.
Estate Issues Legal Warning
The Chinua Achebe Estate, however, rejected these claims and issued a stern warning. It directed Ubaka to “immediately cease and desist from using the name of Chinua Achebe or invoking the Chinua Achebe Estate in connection with any venture, project, promotion or representation without prior written permission.”
The Estate emphasized that unauthorized use of Achebe’s name, likeness, or legacy would prompt legal action to protect the integrity of the late author’s work and family rights.
