Faith-Based Campaign Challenges Valentine Culture

Faith and Youth in Focus
IN a bold counter-narrative to Valentine’s Day celebrations, over 500 teenagers convened at the Assemblies of God Church, Surulere, to pledge abstinence from premarital sex during the church’s 2026 Chastity Parade.
The initiative, organised by HOT Teens Church, has become an annual fixture designed to promote sexual purity and self-discipline among young Christians.
This year’s theme, “Chastity: My Life of Freedom,” framed abstinence not as restriction but as empowerment.
Addressing Social Pressures
Convener Pastor Chidi Udo said the campaign responds to increasing societal pressures on young people, particularly around Valentine’s Day, which he argued has become commercialised and overly sexualised.
He expressed concern about early sexual exposure, peer influence, and digital content shaping teenage attitudes toward relationships.
“Our aim is to remind young people that their worth is not tied to sexual activity,” he said, adding that abstinence reduces health risks and preserves emotional wellbeing.

Guest speaker Pastor Victor Olukoju underscored the biblical basis for the initiative, referencing scriptural teachings that honour marriage as the context for sexual relations.
He encouraged teenagers to define love in spiritual rather than physical terms, urging them to celebrate Valentine’s Day in ways aligned with their faith.
Senior Pastor Rev. Bright Unuane highlighted the role of parents, schools, and religious institutions in guiding children amid what he described as moral decline exacerbated by internet culture.
Youth Commitment and Community Support
Teen executives who addressed the gathering said the annual programme has strengthened their resolve. They described the vow as a public commitment supported by peer accountability and church mentorship.
Dr. Chinyere Udo called on young girls to uphold dignity in dress and conduct, noting that self-respect shapes public perception and personal confidence.
A Solemn Declaration
The event culminated in a collective pledge before the altar, with participants affirming their decision to abstain from sex until marriage.
Organisers said the parade serves as both spiritual renewal and social advocacy, positioning chastity as a deliberate choice in an era of shifting moral values.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the teenagers’ declaration offers a faith-based perspective on love—one rooted in discipline, conviction, and community support.
