FORMER Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, has been crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in a colourful ceremony that drew dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Ladoja first received the traditional Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, before being crowned at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East LGA. The final coronation was held at the historic Mapo Hall on 26 September 2025, where he is expected to be formally presented with the staff of office by Governor Seyi Makinde.
The event, marked by vibrant cultural displays, attracted prominent monarchs and leaders, including the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; and political figures such as former governors Ibikunle Amosun, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
Security was tight, with heavy deployment of DSS operatives and Nigerian Army personnel to ensure order.
Ladoja succeeds Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who passed away on 7 July 2025. The Olubadan stool remains one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional institutions, noted for its unique and transparent succession system.
