Easter: Nigerians Celebrate Amid Security Concerns

Worshippers Mark Resurrection Nationwide
CHRISTIANS across Nigeria on Sunday joined millions of faithful worldwide to celebrate Easter, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Churches across the country held special services featuring prayers, hymns, and sermons focused on sacrifice, hope, and renewal. Many congregations also observed sunrise services, a long-standing Christian tradition symbolising the resurrection.
Despite the spiritual significance of the occasion, this year’s celebrations were held against the backdrop of insecurity in parts of the country, particularly in Plateau and some northern states.
Celebration Amid Challenges
While worshippers gathered in large numbers, reports of recent attacks cast a shadow over festivities in some regions.
Nevertheless, many Christians used the occasion as a moment for reflection, charity, and renewed commitment to faith and community values.
Clergy members across denominations urged Nigerians to remain steadfast, emphasising the message of hope and perseverance that Easter represents.
Christian Association of Nigeria Calls for Action
In its Easter message, the Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria called on both the Federal Government and the Niger State Government to urgently address insecurity and economic hardship.
The State Chairman, Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, in a message titled “Be Hopeful, Be Resilient, Be Compassionate,” urged leaders to take decisive action to protect lives and restore stability.
He warned that insecurity has disrupted farming, displaced communities, and worsened living conditions for many residents.
Message of Compassion and Civic Duty
Bishop Yohanna encouraged Christians to extend support to vulnerable groups, including widows and orphans, while embodying values of love, mercy, and selflessness.
He also urged citizens to remain prayerful and united, expressing support for Governor Umaru Bago’s administration and its development agenda.
Looking ahead, he called for active civic engagement as the 2027 general elections approach, stressing the importance of inclusive governance.
“Let us be living examples of compassion and service,” he said, urging Nigerians to reflect the teachings of Christ in their daily lives.
