Bold Step For Safer Delta: DOPF Applauds Assembly’s Security Bill, Urges Governor’s Swift Assent
THE Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has applauded the Delta State House of Assembly for the successful passage of the Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Bill, describing it as a bold and responsive legislative move aimed at tackling the growing security challenges across the state.
In a press statement jointly signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Emmanuel Enebeli, and Secretary, Shedrack Onitsha, DOPF commended the lawmakers for heeding the persistent calls from stakeholders for a more community-based approach to security, particularly in light of the spate of rural banditry, kidnapping, and herder-farmer clashes that have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.
The group noted that the passage of the bill is a reflection of the Assembly’s responsiveness to the yearnings of Deltans, adding that it marks a significant step toward restoring peace and stability in the state’s most vulnerable communities.
“As a body of professional media practitioners with deep grassroots engagement, we view the establishment of the Community Security Corps as a pragmatic solution capable of restoring confidence among residents, particularly in rural areas,” the statement read. “The bill provides a legal framework for the recruitment, training, and deployment of community-based security operatives who are familiar with the terrains and local dynamics of their communities.”
DOPF further called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to swiftly assent to the bill to enable its immediate implementation, stressing that delay could hamper the much-needed response to worsening insecurity in some parts of the state.
“The prompt signing of this bill into law will signal a new dawn of proactive governance and ensure that communities currently under threat from criminal elements begin to enjoy renewed hope, protection, and stability,” the Forum emphasized.
While urging the state government to ensure a robust, well-funded, and transparent implementation structure, DOPF also called for collaboration with conventional security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders to strengthen the effectiveness of the new security outfit across the 25 local government areas.
The Forum concluded by reiterating its commitment to supporting public awareness campaigns and sensitization on the new law, adding that the restoration of security in the hinterlands will boost food production, drive agribusiness, and enhance overall food security in the state.
“We commend the Delta State House of Assembly once again for this patriotic move and remain ready to play our part in ensuring its success,” the statement added.
