DELTA State Internal Revenue Service (DIRS) has called on tax paying entities in the state to promptly pay their taxes, charges, levies and rates to the state government while those with outstanding liabilities should offset them immediately, otherwise they should be ready for a visit by a well-prepared task force which is set to swing into action by next week, following which the offenders will be arraigned before a mobile court.
Executive Director, Operations, Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Dr. Frank Nwugo, rallied MDAs for onward action, emphasizing that the task of collecting revenue for the state should be treated with all seriousness by the MDAs. Nwugo further urged the MDAs to always be prepared and committed to the all-important task of revenue generation. During today’s interactive meeting with all revenue generating Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state, Nwugo said no stone should be left unturned in making tax collection in Delta State a success.
The meeting was themed: “Implementation of the Delta State Consolidated Taxes, Levies, Charges in line with the Delta State Revenue Consolidation Law 2020: The Journey So Far.” The revenue generating MDAs in the state were invited for an interactive session with the Hon. Commissioner of Finance on the full implementation of the consolidated levies, rates, charges, etc. by all revenue generating MDAs.
The Agenda included reports of achievement, challenges and the way forward, list of consultants to be engaged by the MDAs as well as revenue target for revenue collecting MDAs and strategies for attaining the target. During the meeting, some of the MDAs asked useful questions and got necessary clarifications from the DIRS team.
Nwugo reeled out some of the numerous achievements of the DIRS, saying that the DIRS has ensured seamless collection of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) due to the state government, while it has dragged more informal sector participants into the tax net. Nwugo said that as the state’s tax collectors, they are committed to bringing the best out of the MDAs so they can contribute optimally to tax collection across the state.
During the interactive meeting which held today at the Finance Conference Room, fifth floor of Prof. Chike Edozien Workers’ Secretariat in Asaba, Nwugo thanked Commissioner for Finance, Okenmor Fidelis Tilije for providing useful insights that would help the MDAs improve on tax collection and meet their targets. Nwugo also thanked commissioners, directors and ministry officials present for attending and contributing to the success of the meeting.
DIRS officials present included Dr. Frank Nwugo, Executive Director, Operations, DIRS, Esejo Paul, Mrs. Uwejeyan Juliet, among others. During the meeting, Nwugo reiterated his call to Deltans to pay their taxes as they stand to gain a lot, adding that it will assist in accelerating the delivery of democratic dividends in the state courtesy of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E.
