Digital Era Demands Knowledge Upgrade — NAWOJ Chairperson

NAWOJ CHAIRPERSON URGES WOMEN JOURNALISTS TO EMBRACE DIGITAL GROWTH
Call for Knowledge-Driven Journalism
The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs. Jumoke Johnson, has called on women journalists nationwide to prioritise continuous learning and skills development to remain relevant in the rapidly evolving media landscape.
Mrs. Johnson made the appeal in Lagos during the first NAWOJ Congress for the 2026 calendar year, stressing that professionalism in journalism goes beyond routine reporting and requires a broad knowledge base.
According to her, journalists must “know something about everything” to maintain credibility and effectively serve the public in an age defined by digital transformation and information overload.
Unity as a Catalyst for Progress
Commending the prevailing peace and unity within NAWOJ, particularly in Lagos State, the Chairperson described harmony among members as a key driver of the association’s recent successes.
She encouraged women journalists to sustain a culture of mutual respect, attentive listening, fact-checking, and objective reporting, noting that unity has strengthened NAWOJ’s voice and impact.
“Knowledge is power and the key thing that will distinguish you. As journalists, you must know something about everything and move with the pace of this digital era,” she said.
Digital Platforms and Member Mobilisation
Highlighting achievements recorded under her leadership, Mrs. Johnson announced the launch of the NAWOJ Lagos website, which she said serves as a digital identity and documentation platform for the association’s activities.
She also unveiled the Chapel Champions initiative, aimed at improving coordination and mobilisation across NAWOJ chapels. The initiative, she noted, contributed significantly to the high attendance recorded at the congress.
Another innovation introduced by the association is the NAWOJ Iconic Woman of the Month, designed to recognise women making outstanding contributions to society. Honourees will be celebrated monthly, with a grand ceremony planned for the end-of-year gala.
Advocacy and Programmes for 2026
Looking ahead, Mrs. Johnson revealed that NAWOJ Lagos has mapped out a robust calendar of activities, including programmes marking Breastfeeding Week, Cancer Awareness Month, International Women’s Day, and other advocacy-focused engagements.
She urged members to remain committed and actively participate in all planned activities to enhance the association’s visibility and impact.
Housing and Financial Literacy Concerns
In her remarks, immediate past Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Dr. Adeola Ekine, appealed to the government to establish a housing scheme for journalists, especially women, with flexible payment plans.
She noted that rising accommodation costs have worsened the economic challenges faced by journalists.
Guest speaker Mr. Olalekan Otu also emphasised financial literacy, urging women journalists to cultivate savings habits to ensure long-term financial stability.
