Desperate And Alone: Viral Video Of Homeless Woman In Nnewi Draws Public Concern
BY GLORY UGOBA
A concerned citizen has raised the alarm over the condition of a homeless woman who has been living by the roadside in Nnewi, Anambra State, for several weeks.
The woman, whose identity remains unknown, reportedly took shelter along Old Onitsha Road, directly opposite Premium Kidney Hospital. Viral photos and videos circulating on social media show her sitting helplessly by the busy roadside, exposed to scorching sun and heavy rainfall.
“She has been here for weeks under rain and sunshine, yet no help. Nobody has identified with her, and where she’s staying is by the roadside, which is very dangerous,” the citizen’s viral post read.
The post also warned that the woman’s life was at risk due to her proximity to the highway and surrounding bushes, raising fears she could be hit by vehicles or fall prey to other dangers.
The viral footage has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians expressing shock that such a situation could persist in a major commercial hub like Nnewi. While some criticized residents and passersby for ignoring her plight, others urged the Anambra State Government, social welfare agencies, churches, and charity organizations to intervene immediately.
“We need to take her to a rehabilitation center or any safe place, while efforts continue to trace her relatives,” the post appealed.
As of press time, no one has come forward to identify the woman or her family members. The case has, however, reignited broader discussions about homelessness and the absence of effective social safety nets for vulnerable Nigerians, particularly those struggling with abandonment or mental health challenges.
