THE Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has continued its drive to curb drug abuse and cultism among youths, taking its sensitization campaign to Atebo Comprehensive High School in Ekuigbo-Iyede, Isoko North.
Led by the Department of Community Development and Public Enlightenment, the team—coordinated under the Directorate of Social Services—engaged students on the dangers of drug use and the influence of cult groups. Department head Mrs. Chinenye Ezonfade thanked the DESOPADEC leadership for supporting the outreach and commended the school for its cooperation.
School principal Mrs. Omoghene Gladys welcomed the initiative, saying it would help guide students toward healthier choices.
During the first lecture, Miss Elizabeth Odisu highlighted the severe health risks of substance abuse, from brain damage to potential death, and warned against new dangerous practices such as inhaling septic-tank fumes. She urged students to avoid peers who encourage drug use.
In her session on cultism, Miss Honeywell Eburajolo cautioned students about the tactics used by cult groups to lure young people, stressing that such associations lead to violence and criminality.
The event featured a students’ rendition of “We Are The World” and an interactive Q&A session. Teachers, school administrators, and DESOPADEC officials attended, reinforcing the ongoing partnership to protect youths across the mandate areas.
