Demand Local Government Autonomy Implementation, Former Lawmaker Tells Nigerians
FORMER federal lawmaker Chief Sam Onuigbo has urged Nigerians to demand the full implementation of local government autonomy from their political leaders.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Onuigbo described the delay in enforcing the Supreme Court ruling of July 11, 2024 as “unfortunate.” He said the judgment, which granted full autonomy to local governments, has not yet translated into action across the country.
Governors Blamed for Implementation Delay
Onuigbo, who serves on the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), alleged that some state governors remain the major obstacle to implementing the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“It is up to the people to start asking questions and demand accountability from their local government chairmen,” he said.
He added that most local councils show little sign of development despite receiving billions of naira in allocations.
“When you visit many local governments, you see little to no progress. Yet, when you check how much they have received, it runs into billions. So, where has the money gone?” Onuigbo asked.
Court Ruling and Its Significance
Onuigbo explained that the Supreme Court ruling was designed to promote grassroots development and ensure that funds reach local councils directly.
He said the decision aimed to deepen democracy and reduce corruption by removing state interference in local government finances.
However, he noted that constitutional bottlenecks, particularly Section 162—which allows for joint state and local government accounts—have slowed implementation.
“The Federal Government has done its part by ensuring transparency in allocations. President Bola Tinubu deserves commendation for this effort,” he added.
Citizens’ Role in Ensuring Transparency
Onuigbo encouraged citizens and civil society organisations to take active roles in holding their elected officials accountable. He said Nigerians should demand clear reports on how local governments use their funds.
“The people must stay informed and ask how their money is being used. Transparency starts with the citizens’ voices,” he said.
He warned that continued delay in granting autonomy could worsen corruption and mismanagement at the local level.
Commendation for President Tinubu
The former lawmaker also praised President Bola Tinubu for promoting transparency in the federation account. According to him, the president’s leadership has ensured that subnational governments receive their rightful allocations.
“We must build on this progress and make sure that local governments work for the people,” Onuigbo concluded.
