Delta State To Get New Capital “Delta City,” Urhobo Majority In Two Districts

DELTA State is set to establish a new capital, “Delta City,” carved from parts of Warri town, Uvwie, Okpe, and Ughelli South local government areas. The move will see the Urhobo ethnic group forming the majority in two senatorial districts and holding an even split with the Ijaws in the third.
Plans include the creation of two new local government areas from Ughelli North and Ughelli South. Additionally, Central Urhobo will be designated the state’s second language of commerce, with mandatory teaching in schools.
The restructuring affects Delta South-West (Warri North, Warri South-West, Warri South, Okpe, Sapele, Ethiope West), Delta South-East (Burutu, Patani, Bomadi, Ughelli South, Udu), and Delta North (Ughelli North, Ethiope East, Isoko North, Isoko South, Uvwie) senatorial districts.
Key figures in the announcement include Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.
