Delta Loses A Watchdog: Oborevwori Mourns Punch Reporter @43

DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has condoled the family of Punch Newspaper correspondent, Matthew Ochei, following the journalist’s death on 6 January 2026. Ochei, who hailed from Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area, reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 43.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described Ochei’s death as a profound blow to the state’s media community, noting that the journalist exemplified professional courage and ethical discipline. Oborevwori praised the late correspondent for holding fast to public enlightenment, factual reporting, and responsible journalism — values he said earned Ochei wide respect among colleagues, public institutions, and information consumers in Delta and beyond.
“This is a painful moment. We have lost a committed and fearless voice,” the governor said, lamenting the void created by the reporter’s sudden exit. Oborevwori also extended condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, affirming that the state government stands in solidarity with journalists in their moment of grief. He prayed for strength for the bereaved family and media colleagues, asking God to grant them comfort and fortitude to bear the loss.
Ochei’s death has triggered widespread mourning across press circles, with senior editors, correspondents, and NUJ leaders describing him as a reporter who prioritised accuracy over convenience and service over self-preservation. The NUJ in Delta has since announced internal mourning protocols and memorial deliberations as colleagues reflect on the emotional and institutional vacuum left behind.
