Delta APC Reports Rancour-Free Congresses, Eyes 2027 Momentum

Committee Commends Orderly Exercise
THE committee overseeing the ward and local government congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has commended party members for what it described as a peaceful and well-coordinated exercise across the state.
Secretary of the Congress Committee, Hon. Simon Chukwuemeka Atigwe, gave the assessment while addressing journalists at Ward 10 in Oshimili South Local Government Area after monitoring activities across Delta South, Delta Central and Delta North senatorial districts.
According to Atigwe, the monitoring team moved across several wards without recording disputes or disruptions. He described the process as seamless, orderly and reflective of growing internal cohesion within the party.
“As part of our assignment, we have been moving round the state to assess the situation on ground… what we have seen has been commendable,” he said.
Integration After Political Realignment
Earlier, Delta APC State Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, told members of the committee that the party had achieved about 95 percent integration following the April 28, 2025 defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the APC.
Sobotie credited the governor’s leadership for stabilising and aligning party structures across the state, urging the congress committee to ensure that all procedures complied strictly with party guidelines to maintain credibility.
Party leaders described the congress, conducted across 270 wards in the state, as largely rancour-free, attributing the calm atmosphere to the adoption of the consensus method in selecting ward executives.
Consensus Approach Gains Support
At Ward 2 in Owa-Alero, Ika North East Local Government Area, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa joined party leaders in endorsing the consensus approach. He participated in affirming consensus candidates for ward chairman and other positions.
Supporters of the method said it promoted inclusiveness and reduced tensions often associated with intra-party contests.
In Ughelli North Local Government Area, Council Chairman Olorogun Jaro Egbo confirmed that consultations were concluded peacefully, with wards such as Ughelli, Ogor, Orogun, Agbarho, Agbarha, Uwheru and Evwreni adopting consensus arrangements.
Women’s Participation Highlighted
Stakeholders also highlighted the increased participation of women in ward leadership structures. Former National Woman Leader of the APC and NEXIM Bank Executive Director, Stella Okotete, noted that women emerged in key positions including vice chairman, welfare officer, treasurer and assistant youth leader.
She described the development as evidence of the party’s commitment to its constitutional provisions on gender inclusion.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Across the state, party chieftains expressed optimism about the APC’s prospects in the 2027 general elections. Leaders linked the peaceful congress to improved unity and grassroots mobilisation.
While political observers note that internal harmony during congresses does not automatically translate into electoral victory, party officials argue that the exercise demonstrates organisational stability and readiness for future contests.
For now, APC stakeholders in Delta State say the smooth conduct of the ward congress has strengthened confidence within party ranks as preparations gradually begin for the next electoral cycle.
