Death of Adichie’s Son: Euracare Defends Care, Orders Probe
Hospital Denies Inaccuracies, Offers Condolences After Child’s Death Sparks Controversy
EURACARE Multispecialist Hospital has broken its silence over the death of the 21-month-old son of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, offering condolences while disputing aspects of reports surrounding the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the hospital described the loss as deeply painful and extended sympathy to the parents and extended family, acknowledging the profound grief caused by the death of a child.
The hospital, however, said some public narratives about the child’s treatment were inaccurate. It stated that the patient had been referred for specialised diagnostic procedures after being managed at two paediatric facilities and arrived at Euracare in a critical condition.
Euracare said its clinical team provided care in line with established protocols and global medical standards, including sedation when necessary, and worked with external medical teams as recommended by the family.
Despite these efforts, the hospital said the child passed away within 24 hours of presentation. It added that a detailed internal investigation was underway and that it would cooperate fully with regulatory and clinical review processes.
Adichie has alleged that her son would still be alive if not for what she described as fatal lapses in care, including excessive sedation and inadequate monitoring. She said the child was stable and preparing for emergency evacuation to the United States before complications arose during procedures at Euracare.
She further alleged prior incidents involving the same anaesthesiologist and questioned why the practitioner was allowed to continue working at the facility.
Euracare said it remained committed to compassion, patient safety, and responsible handling of the matter while respecting the family’s privacy.
