Competition, Form, Focus: Inside Chelle’s AFCON Selection Calls

FRESH insights have emerged into Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to leave out several notable names from Nigeria’s final 28-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with competition, commitment, and mental readiness cited as key factors.
Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye’s exclusion followed internal discussions over his availability and expectations. The Udinese shot-stopper was expected to battle Stanley Nwabali for the starting position but reportedly insisted on a guaranteed first-choice role. Chelle and his technical crew rejected the demand, maintaining that no player would be handed a starting spot without competition.
Udinese also communicated concerns to the NFF, indicating reluctance to release Okoye if he was not assured playing time, fearing the club would lose him for weeks without match involvement. With no compromise reached, Chelle retained confidence in Nwabali—now medically cleared—and included Francis Uzoho as backup.
Terem Moffi’s omission was linked to concerns about his mental state following recent unrest involving supporters of his French club. The coaching staff reportedly felt the striker needed time to regain focus, especially after signaling his intention to seek a January transfer.
Tolu Arokodare was overlooked due to limited game time and underwhelming performances in previous national team outings, including fixtures against Rwanda and during the Unity Cup in England. Chelle instead opted for Paul Onuachu, whose strong form at Trabzonspor has placed him among the Turkish league’s top scorers.
Uche Chrisantus also missed out after an unconvincing display in the World Cup qualifier against South Africa, coupled with difficulties settling at Crystal Palace. Chelle now turns his focus to preparing a squad he believes is fully committed and AFCON-ready.
