City FC Grind Out Crucial Win Against Conference Leaders
By FRED LONGJOHN OBEH
CITY FC Abuja earned a morale-boosting 1–0 victory over Nigeria National League Conference C leaders Doma United FC on Saturday, delivering a tactically mature display at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch in Abuja. The result highlighted City FC’s growing confidence despite their modest position on the league table.
The first half was defined by balance and caution, as both teams cancelled each other out through compact defending and controlled midfield play. City FC’s engine room, led by captain Justin Dominic, successfully disrupted Doma United’s build-up, preventing the league leaders from dictating the pace.
After the restart, City FC shifted gears, increasing their attacking intent and pressing higher up the field. Shuaib Akinwande’s energy proved decisive, and in the 57th minute he capitalised on a loose ball in the box, calmly tapping home to break the deadlock. The goal reflected City FC’s superior second-half intensity.
Doma United pushed for an equaliser, committing men forward, but City FC’s defensive discipline ensured the lead remained intact. Dominic later described the match as highly competitive, expressing confidence that the victory could spark a stronger push in the second half of the season.
City FC now sit sixth with eight points, while Doma United maintain their lead at the top with 16 points. Attention now turns to their Matchday Eight rematch later this month.
