Churches Told To Stay Vigilant As CAN Condemns Plateau Attack

CAN Calls for Vigilance After Deadly Plateau Attack
THE Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged churches across the country to heighten security awareness and take proactive measures to safeguard worshippers following the killing of more than 40 people in Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred in Angwan Rukuba in Jos North during Palm Sunday, has sparked national outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity.
‘A Tragic Pattern of Violence’
CAN President, Daniel Okoh, condemned the killings, describing them as part of a troubling pattern of violence targeting innocent civilians.
He noted that the victims included men, women, and children, stressing that the incident has deepened fears among communities already grappling with recurring attacks.
Okoh lamented that what should have been a solemn day of peace and reflection was instead marked by bloodshed.
Call for Alertness During Holy Week
With the Christian calendar moving into critical observances such as Good Friday and Easter vigils, CAN urged worshippers to combine prayer with heightened vigilance.
Church leaders were advised to work closely with security agencies, strengthen internal safety measures, and remain alert to potential threats during gatherings.
“Faith must be matched with vigilance,” Okoh said, emphasising the need for deliberate action to protect congregations.
Concerns Over Fake Military Uniforms
The CAN president also raised alarm over reports that the attackers disguised themselves in military-style uniforms.
He described the development as dangerous, warning that it undermines public trust and complicates security responses.
CAN called on security agencies to investigate the circulation and use of fake military attire, urging authorities to take decisive steps to curb the trend.
Demand for Justice and Lasting Solutions
While acknowledging efforts by the Plateau State Government, CAN stressed that temporary responses are insufficient to address the scale of insecurity.
The association called for a thorough investigation into the attack and demanded that those responsible be arrested and prosecuted promptly.
Okoh added that Nigerians are increasingly frustrated by recurring violence and are demanding concrete, long-term solutions to restore safety and stability.
