Chimamanda’s Son’s Death Sparks Official Investigation In Lagos

Sanwo-Olu Orders Probe as Chimamanda Adichie Alleges Medical Negligence in Son’s Death
LAGOS State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered a full-scale investigation into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, the 21-month-old son of award-winning Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who died on 6 January 2026 at a private medical facility in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the state government, Sanwo-Olu described the incident as deeply distressing and extended condolences to the Adichie family, stressing that the government maintains zero tolerance for medical negligence across health facilities operating in Lagos.
HEFAMAA Begins Investigation
The governor directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to commence an immediate, independent and transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The agency has already visited the facility involved and begun a comprehensive review of allegations, including compliance with clinical protocols, professional conduct and patient safety standards.
According to the state government, HEFAMAA will collaborate with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other regulatory bodies, with findings to be made public upon conclusion of the investigation.
NMA Promises Fair Hearing
The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) also announced it would investigate the matter. Its chairman, Dr. Babajide Saheed, cautioned against conclusions drawn from social media narratives, stressing the need for due process and fair hearing for all parties.
Dr. Saheed said the association would engage both the hospital and the bereaved family, noting that professional accountability must be determined through proper investigation rather than public speculation.
Allegations by the Family
Adichie, in a statement that later circulated on social media and was confirmed by her representative, accused Euracare Hospital of “criminal negligence.” She alleged that her son died after being administered an excessive dose of propofol during a medical procedure, claiming he was not adequately monitored afterward.
The author said her son had been scheduled for medical evacuation to the United States the following day, with specialists at Johns Hopkins Hospital on standby.
Call for Accountability
While the Lagos State Government urged calm pending the outcome of investigations, it assured the public that any individual or institution found culpable would face legal consequences.
