Ceasefire Row: Trump Accuses Nigerian Source Of Misinformation

Trump Raises Alarm Over Alleged False Report
FORMER United States President Donald Trump has accused a Nigerian-based platform of originating what he described as “fake news” regarding Iran’s response to a proposed ceasefire.
In a series of social media posts, Trump alleged that the report, which was widely circulated by CNN, falsely claimed to reflect official positions from senior Iranian authorities.
Claims of Fabrication and Misattribution
Trump insisted that the information attributed to Iran’s leadership was entirely fabricated and did not come from any legitimate source within the Iranian government.
“No one can believe that fake news CNN put out a knowingly false and dangerous statement… It didn’t come from the upper levels of the Iranian government,” he wrote, describing the report as misleading and potentially inflammatory.
He further claimed that the story originated from what he termed a “troublemaking” Nigerian website, accusing it of deliberately spreading misinformation.
Call for Retraction
The former US president said he had demanded that CNN withdraw the report, arguing that its publication could escalate tensions during a sensitive phase of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
According to him, the alleged falsehood risked distorting public understanding of Iran’s position and complicating ceasefire negotiations.
Concerns Over Information Integrity
The controversy highlights growing concerns over the role of digital platforms in shaping narratives during international crises.
Analysts note that misinformation—whether deliberate or accidental—can have significant consequences, particularly in conflict situations where accurate communication is critical.
No Immediate Response from Accused Parties
As of the time of reporting, neither CNN nor the alleged Nigerian platform had issued an official response to Trump’s claims.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions between political actors and media organisations over the credibility and sourcing of information in high-stakes geopolitical developments.
