Bill To Amend Violence Against Persons Law Scales First Reading In Delta Assembly

THE Delta State House of Assembly has taken a step toward strengthening its legal framework on human rights protection as a bill seeking to amend the Violence Against Persons Law, 2020 passed first reading at plenary on Tuesday.
The amendment bill, sponsored by the lawmaker representing Ughelli North 1 Constituency, Hon. Matthew Omonade, enjoys broad backing with 19 other legislators listed as co-sponsors.
Moving the motion for the bill’s first reading, Omonade emphasized its importance in addressing emerging gaps in the implementation of the existing law. The motion was seconded by Hon. Pereotu Oloye, representing Burutu 2 Constituency, before it was adopted by the House.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor announced that the bill has been slated for second reading on Thursday, October 2, 2025, when members are expected to debate its general principles.
Meanwhile, the Assembly deferred the scheduled second reading of the Delta State Landlord and Tenant Bill, 2025 to Thursday, September 25, 2025. The bill, sponsored by the House Leader and member representing Aniocha North Constituency, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, had earlier passed first reading on July 22, 2025.
