BEDC Gets 75,000 Free Meters, Warns Customers Against Paying

38,000 Meters Allocated to Edo
THE Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) says it has taken delivery of 75,000 prepaid meters from the Federal Government as part of a nationwide free metering initiative aimed at curbing estimated billing.
Speaking in Benin City, BEDC Managing Director Jonathan Lawani said the company is expected to receive 161,000 meters in total under the programme. So far, 75,000 have arrived and installation has commenced across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states.
Of the allocation, more than 38,000 meters are designated for Edo State, covering Benin, Uromi and Auchi districts.
Customers Urged to Reject Illegal Charges
Lawani warned customers not to pay for the meters, stressing that both the devices and installation are free. He encouraged consumers to report any cases of extortion or irregularities.
He also addressed concerns that metering leads to higher electricity bills, stating that prepaid meters only measure actual consumption and enhance fairness in billing.
The BEDC chief cautioned against electricity theft and tampering, warning that offenders would be sanctioned.
Edo State Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbor, reiterated the state government’s commitment to power sector reforms. He announced plans to establish a meter assembly plant to support improved service delivery and infrastructure development.
The initiative is expected to boost transparency, reduce billing disputes and strengthen confidence in electricity distribution across BEDC’s coverage areas.
