BEDC Promotes Electrical Safety As Rainy Season Intensifies
AS Nigeria experiences heavier rainfall, BEDC Electricity Plc has intensified efforts to reduce electrical accidents by educating both the public and its staff on safety practices.
The initiative, announced in a statement by BEDC Head of Branding and Corporate Communications, Mrs. Evelyn Gbiwen, highlights the importance of safety awareness during the rainy season.
According to Mr. Gilbert Nweke, Head of Safety, Health and Environment at BEDC, the campaign focuses on educating people about the dangers of unsafe electrical practices. These include:
-
Tampering with electrical installations
-
Living or trading under high-tension overhead lines
-
Overcrowding electrical sockets
-
Touching or stepping on exposed wires
“Electrical accidents are more likely during the rainy season, but they can be prevented if the public follows the safety tips provided by BEDC,” Nweke said.
BEDC MD/CEO, Deolu Ijose, emphasized that the company’s commitment goes beyond reliable power supply. “Our goal is to keep customers safe while ensuring uninterrupted electricity services,” he said.
Nweke advised that these safety measures should be applied at home, in offices, workshops, and public spaces, particularly when using electrical appliances. He stressed that such precautions could prevent tragic accidents.

The sensitization program is ongoing, aiming to bridge the knowledge gap about electricity consumption and the entire electricity value chain.
For technical staff and field workers, BEDC emphasizes health and safety as a priority, ensuring employees can perform optimally while safeguarding themselves and the public. Staff are encouraged to apply safety knowledge on the field to maintain high service standards.
