Balanced Reporting Key To Tackling Insecurity, Say Experts At DOPF Security Lecture
SECURITY experts have called for impartial and balanced media coverage as a critical part of addressing the insecurity plaguing Nigeria.
The recommendation came during the 5th Annual Lecture Series of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, in Asaba, Delta State. Themed “Security Challenges: Finding a Local Implementable Solution,” the event was attended by Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, security agency representatives, and other stakeholders.
Force Police Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, addressed the role of media practitioners in curbing cybercrimes such as scams, fraud, cyber prostitution, and the spread of fake news. He highlighted President Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for security agencies to crack down on cybercriminals, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys.”
Adejobi criticized the misuse of ICT expertise by young Nigerians and condemned the corruption that undermines efforts to hold offenders accountable. He also called out online activists who profit from recovering illicit funds while accusing law enforcement of corruption.
The FPRO urged journalists to verify their reports and maintain ethical practices, warning against becoming “paid journalists” who demand money for withholding stories. He emphasized that asking for monetary incentives undermines journalism and contravenes the Prohibition Act of 2024.
Adejobi concluded by advocating for collaboration among all sectors of society to strengthen security and ensure effective policing.
