ASUU Banks On New Pact To End Frequent University Strikes

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed optimism that industrial action can be avoided for at least three years following the signing of a new agreement with the Federal Government.
The agreement, signed and unveiled on Wednesday, is designed to stabilise Nigeria’s university system and address long-standing issues affecting funding and staff welfare.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, said the deal contains measurable provisions that can be effectively monitored to prevent disputes from escalating into strikes.
According to him, an Implementation Monitoring Team has been established and will be domiciled at the National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure compliance with the agreement.
Prof. Piwuna confirmed that the new 2025 agreement has replaced the controversial 2009 pact, which had triggered several strikes in the past. He said all future engagements would be based on the 2025 agreement, while older accords would only serve as historical reference.
